St. Mary Swormville Presents 5K Chowder Chase/Beer Social and Family Picnic July 19-21

St. Mary Swormville parish community is celebrating their 170th annual picnic July 19 through July 21. The weekend of fellowship and tradition featuring St. Mary’s famous chowder, will also have some new attractions this year.
Kicking off the weekend is the eighth annual 5K Chowder Chase on Friday, July 19. “The certified course runs through the neighborhoods surrounding St. Mary’s and is fast, flat and well-marked, sufficiently staffed with numerous volunteers from start to finish. There will be cash awards for the first overall male/female as well as the masters male/female”, according to Lynda Carver, Race Director. Walkers are also invited to participate, and will follow a 3K course. The race begins at 7 p.m. Runners and walkers may pick up their packets at the Parish Center Thursday, July 18 from 5 to 7 or beginning at 4:30 on race day. Registration is $28 through July 17 and $33 July 18 to race day. Runners will receive a Chowder Chase T-shirt (guaranteed to the first 300 runners), Coors Light, a chowder voucher, and slice of pizza. Register online by clicking on the Chowder Chase logo at http://www.stmaryswormville.org.
Sponsors of this year’s Chowder Chase are Joe Cecconi Chrysler Complex, Marygold Manor, Bank on Buffalo, Wild Horse Wine and Spirits, Elements Massage, Universal Woodworks, Switala Construction, Gabe’s Collision, and Tacos, Community and Beer.
Also happening that night is the Beer and Wine Social under the Wild Horse Wine and Spirits Beer Tent. Live music from one of the area’s premier bands, Party of Nine, will be featured from 6:30 pm to 10:30pm., along with local craft beers, wine and local food trucks J&L BBQ, Mineo and Sapio Street Eats, and Sassi Cakes.

On Saturday, July 20, Mass will be celebrated under the tent at 6 p.m., followed by cutting vegetables for the kettle-cooked chowder. Bring utensils and cutting boards and join the tradition.

Picnic festivities begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday, July 23 with fun for the entire family. Eat-in or take-home chowder sales will be available. Featured this year is a brand new children’s midway with new games, rides and activities. A $15 day pass or $40 family day pass for inflatables and rides will be available.

Krolick’s chicken dinners will be served in the air-conditioned gym, and hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, kettle corn and funnel cakes will be available on the grounds. The Wild Horse Beer and Wine Tent opens at noon with live music throughout the day featuring St. Mary’s pastor, Fr. Robert Zilliox, and his band, “Freestyle”.
